A Bike Ride

The film ended and darkness illuminated the room

Some rose to leave and some stayed, held in their seats by a residue of the screen

He was among those who rose and collected their coats

He made his way down the wooden staircase and out

into the night, past old men who stood,

their cigarette smoke like frost in the night

The combination lock had changed during the film

but cold fingers found it and freed the bike and then he was away

the roads were uneven and people, like deer,

staggered along between fisherman’s bars

He ducked between them, past the church,

past closed shops, lit bright in the night
